Franz and Dynamic Object Language Labs partner
to deliver CLIM on the PC Platforms

For Immediate Release
June 27, 1995

BERKELEY, California -- Franz and Dynamic Object Language Labs, Inc. (DOLL) announced today an agreement that will bring the promise of CLIM portability to the PC platform.

Dynamic Object Language Labs is now actively porting the Unix version of CLIM 2.1 to Allegro CL for Windows. The product, which will be sold as an add-on for Allegro CL for Windows, will be released by the end of the year. A beta version is expected in the third quarter of 1995. CLIM will run under Windows, Windows NT and soon Windows95. Dynamic Object Language Labs is also considering porting CLIM to Macintosh Common Lisp (MCL). Franz and Dynamic Object Language Labs intend to synchronize future releases such that customers will be able to use the same version of CLIM on Unix and PC platforms.

"We are very pleased to team with Franz to deliver the power of CLIM to the PC platform," said Bob Laddaga, President of Dynamic Object Language Labs. "Franz' version of CLIM is a significant demonstration of the portability and software reuse capability of the Common Lisp Object System (CLOS). And CLIM solves the problem of making portable user interfaces, one of the most difficult problems in software development."

"This agreement with Dynamic Object Language Labs will bring the promise of CLIM to fruition," said Fritz Kunze, President of Franz Inc. "CLIM is used extensively by our Unix customers. Now they will be joined by PC users with true cross platform development and delivery."

CLIM, the Common Lisp Interface Manager, is a powerful high-level user interface management system for Common Lisp applications. CLIM allows developers to easily build and maintain applications that are portable to a variety of different window systems and toolkits. CLIM is the defacto user interface standard for ANSI CLOS/Common Lisp.

CLIM is layered on top of the host window system, and insulates the developer from the details and differences of the underlying toolkits. CLIM applications automatically adopt to the native look and feel of the host window system. CLIM uses the windows toolkits directly, instead of emulating them, so it is significantly more efficient. CLIM for Windows will be available directly from Franz. Franz will continue to develop and support CLIM directly on Unix platforms and collaborate with technology partners on other platforms.

Dynamic Object Language Labs is strongly committed to porting CLIM to other PC platforms, but the announcement of the port of CLIM to the Macintosh will depend on market demand.
